Conservation Districts Funds in Jeopardy

Michigan Conservation District funding is in jeopardy due to the proposed 2008 budget cuts in the State of Michigan. The Monroe Conservation District receives $19,200 from the State of Michigan annually. This funding in 2006 generated other funds to provide over $727,000 dollars of local conservation practices being applied on the land. The Monroe Conservation District provides technical assistance for water quality and forestry concerns, educational seminars, annual tree sale, native plant sale, pond management information, scholarship funding, education in the schools, poster contest for all second grade classrooms in Monroe County, etc.

Michigan's Conservation Districts are "unique" local units of State Government that utilize state, federal and private sector resources to solve today's conservation problems. The guiding philosophy of all Conservation Districts is that decisions on conservation issues should be made at the local level, by local people, with technical assistance provided by the district Staff and partner agencies.

Please support the Monroe Conservation District by calling or speaking to your local legislators to show your support of Michigan Conservation Districts and to help restore funding.
